The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, on Saturday assured leaders of the Hindu community that hartals would not be enforced in April 17-18 during their festival of ‘punya snan’ (holy bath).
Khaleda made the assurances when a delegation of Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Welfare Front and ‘Langalbandh punya snan festival celebration committee’ met her at her Gulshan office in the morning with a request not to call hartal for April 17-18.
The delegation was led by Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Welfare Front convener Goutam Chakravarty.
Goutam told New Age that the BNP chairperson had assured them that she would consider the matter as her party respected all religions.
She told them she would consider their appeal with sympathy.
The holy bath festival would be celebrated in April 17-18 at Langalbandh in Sonargaon under Narayanganj district, he said adding that thousands of Hindu devotes from both home and abroad would assemble at Langalbandh for the holy dip.
Langalbandh committee president Paritosh Saha and secretary Basu Dev Acharja, among others, were in the delegation.
There was speculation that the BNP-led opposition alliance might enforce a general strike in April 17-18.
A senior leader of BNP told New Age on Monday that there was no possibility of enforcing a hartal until April 21. (Source)
