Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urges all to join in Khaleda-called ‘second liberation war’

Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday asked people to join in the ‘second liberation war’ declared by party chairperson Khaleda Zia to free the country from the clutch of the ‘inept, corrupt and fascist Awami League government’.
The BNP spokesperson made the call from a discussion held to mark Independence and National Day, alleging that the AL government had begun mass killing in the country more than 40 years after such killings had been perpetrated by Pakistani occupation force in 1971.
The BNP organised the discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the city. Mosharraf Hossain was the chief guest of the discussion chaired by Fakhrul.
Fakhrul also said the government had lost its moral right to stay in power with its hands tainted with blood of the people.
Speaking on the war crimes trials, he accused the government of misleading the legal course of the International Crimes Tribunal to serve its petty political interests which had called the validity of the trials into question.
‘We for sure want trial of war criminals. But we don’t want a farcical trial. The trial must deliver justice. The trial must conform to the international and national standards,’ he said.
‘But,’ he went on, ‘The government has not taken that path, as its goal [of reaping political gains] will not be fulfilled if the trial is held in a free, fair and transparent manner.’
Referring to the recent killing in police fire, Fakhrul said, ‘The Pakistani occupation force carried out genocide in Bangladesh some 40 years back. Now the AL government began a mass killing in the country.’
He said, ‘People are being killed in indiscriminate police fire while the body of 15-year-old Bangladeshi girl Felani remains hanging from the barbed-wire fence along the border. Is this the type of independence we sought?’
Fakhrul urged all to build a resistance against the AL government, saying Khaleda Zia had called for waging a ‘second liberation war’. ‘This war is harder. You must get the entire nation united to win it.’
Ganashasthya Kendra founding chairman Zafrullah Chowhdury, BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, MK Anwar, and Mirza Abbas, adviser to the BNP chairperson Shah Moazzem Hossain, vice-chairmen Hafizuddin Ahmed and Sadeque Hossain Khoka, also spoke on the occasion.
