The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance on Sunday called countrywide dawn-to-dusk general strike for Tuesday in protest against the recent killing of seven people in clashes with the police in Chapainawbganj, Sirajganj and Khulna.
Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student organisation backed by Jamaat -e-Islami, however, earlier in the day called a dawn-to-dusk shutdown for the same day protesting at the arrest of its president Delwar Hussain Sayedee.
The BNP-led alliance called the strike protesting against the recent killing of seven people and recent ‘genocide’ and demanding the release of alliance leaders and activists arrested on March 11, resignation of the ‘failed’ government and holding the next general election under a non-party neutral government.
A meeting of the alliance, held with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair at her office at Gulshan at 9:00pm on Sunday, made the decision.
Acting BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a briefing announced the programmes decided at the meeting.
Khaleda would announce next programmes from the
public meeting of the alliance to be held in front of BNP central office at Naya Paltan at 3:00pm on April 10, demanding resignation of the government, he said.
Khaleda Zia might announce series of programmes including series of general strike from the rally to mount pressure on the government to accept the opposition’s demand by April, an alliance leader told New Age.
He said alliance leaders would visit different districts to mobilise public support to their current oust-government movement.
Liberal Democratic Party chairman Oli Ahmed, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Halim, Bangladesh Jatiya Party chairman Andaliv Rahman Partha, Islamic Oikya Jote chairman Abdul Latif Nezami, Khelafat Majlish amir Mohammad Ishaq, Kalyan Party chairman Syed M Ibrahim and Labour Party chairman Mustafizur Rahman Iran, among others, were present at the meeting.
Earlier, in a statement, Shibir general secretary Abdul Jabbar, called the general strike for Tuesday and countrywide demonstrations for today, protesting at the arrest of Shibir president.
The Shibir also threatened to call nonstop demonstrations including general strike till the fall of the government if the Shibir president was not released immediately.
A team of detective branch on Sunday arrested the Shibir president at Shyamali in the capital along with some of his fellows when they were preparing for a procession.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police media and public relation deputy commissioner Masudur Rahman said that Delwar was arrested in connection with recent violence including arson, vandalism, bombing and assault on police and he taken to detective branch’s Minto Road office. (Source)
