People from all walks of life Friday paid homage to anti-British revolutionary Binod Bihari Chowdhury in Dhaka and Chittagong.
His funeral was held at the Abhay Mitra crematory in Chittagong on Friday night. He was given state honours in both Dhaka and Chittagong.
Binod Bihari, a close associate of the anti-British revolutionary Master’da Suryya Sen, died in a hospital in Kolkata on April 10. He was 103.
His body arrived at Shahjalal International Airport by a Biman flight about 12 noon. The prime minister’s assistant personal secretary Saifuzzaman Shikhar received the body.
The body, covered with the national flag was then taken to the Central Shaheed Minar for public viewing.
On behalf of the acting president Abdul Hamid, his assistant personal secretary Monirul Islam laid a wreath on the coffin.
Mahbubul Hoque Shakilm, special assistant to the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, and her personal assistant Saifuzzaman Shikhor then paid tributes to Binod Bihari on her behalf.
He was given a guard of honour by the Dhaka district administration at the Central Shaheed Minar.
His body was then flown to Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong by a helicopter about 5:30pm where he was also given a guard of honour.
People of all walks of life paid respect to him at the JM Sen Hall and the Shaheed Minar in the port city.
The industries minister, Dilip Barua, Chittagong mayor M Manjur Alam, former mayor and the city unit Awami League president Mohiuddin Chowdhury, city unit BNP president Amir Khashru Mahamud Chowdhury and Chittagong University vice-chancellor Anwarul Azim Arif, among others, placed wreaths on the coffin.
The Communist Party of Bangladesh, the United Peoples’ Democratic Front, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, the Chittagong University Teachers’ Association, Hindu Foundation, Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Unity Council, the Students Union, the District Teachers’ Association, Hindu Mahajote and Ainjibi Okiya Parishad also placed wreaths on the coffin.
Binod Bihari was born at Uttar Bhurshi of Boalkhali in Chittagong on January 10, 1911. He took part in the Chittagong armoury raid under the leadership of Suryya Sen in 1930 that shook the British rule. He was struck with bullets in the fighting. (Source)
