Wasfia Nazreen conquers Europe’s highest peak Mt Elbrus

Wasfia Nazreen, the second Bangladeshi women to conquer the Mount Everest, on Thursday scaled the highest peak of Europe, Mount Elbrus.
A post in her Facebook profile said Wasfia put ‘Bangladesh’s flag on the summit of Europe on March 28 at 7:51am Russian time, 9:51am Bangladesh time,’ after several attempts, fighting the dreadful wind and icy conditions.
Guided by Anna Petrova, she reached the top ‘evading a dangerous 50km/h wind speed, -35 wind-chill, zero visibility and 10cm snow’, the post read.
Wasfia ‘remembered all the martyrs of 1971, the spirit of Shahbagh and justice’ after reaching the summit.
She, however, was beaten severely by the wind and is currently being treated for mild photo keratitis, otherwise known as snow blindness. In the post, she also asked everyone to ‘pray for her safe and healthy return home’.
She had started her journey towards Europe’s highest peak on March 16.
Mount Elbrus is located in the western Caucasus mountain range, in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay–Cherkessia, Russia, near the border of Georgia. Its peak is the highest in the Caucasus. Mount Elbrus’ west summit stands at 5,642 metres (18,510 ft) and the east summit is slightly lower at 5,621 metres (18,442 ft).
Wasfia Nazreen had started her ‘Bangladesh on Seven Summits’ expedition in July 2011 to mark the 40 years of Bangladesh’s independence.
She has already conquered the world’s highest peak Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Aconcagua in Argentina, the second highest of the Seven summits and the highest point outside the Himalayas, and the highest mountain of Antarctica Vinson Massif. (Source)
