JL leader returns file snatched from Barisal land office

A file snatched by the Juba League Barisal City unit convener from a land office in the city on Thursday noon was returned on Friday morning.
Witnesses said JL Barisal City unit convener and former and former councillor of Barisal City Corporation Ward 17 Nizamul Islam Nizam and a group of his associates snatched the file on a 0.12 acres of land worth around Tk 2.5 crore when it was tabled for dispute resolution under Section 28 of the Land Survey Act.
Assistant settlement officer Ranjit Kumar Khaskel of the land office confirmed the incident and said Zakia Sultana and her family had been in possession of the land near Nizamul’s house on Fakir Bari Road in downtown Barisal for the past 40 years.
Zakia and her family became involved in a dispute as Abdur Rashid and Abdul Barek recently claimed ownership of the land by purchase.
On Thursday, while the dispute resolution hearing was in progress, Nizamul and his associates entered the land office and demanded that the file on the disputed land should be given to him.
As the official concerned refused to hand over the file without the consent of the parties involved in the dispute, Nizamul’s associates snatched it, said Ranjit.
‘As we informed our higher officials about the incident, a photocopy of the snatched documents was returned to us on Thursday afternoon and the original papers on Friday morning,’ he told New Age.
Zakia alleged Nizamul snatched the file with the ill-intention of destroying the documents in it to grab her land.
Nizamul, however, denied the accusation, saying he neither owned nor shared the land. ‘We only asked the land official to give the documents for photocopying and after
doing that we returned them to the land office,’ he said. (Source)
