Shahbagh Protests: One hunger striker falls sick, hospitalized

One of the 19 protesters taking part in a fast-unto-death demanding a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir was admitted to BIRDEM Hospitals after he fell sick on Friday, the third day of the hunger strike.
Seven members of Shaheed Rumi Squad, named after independence war martyr Shafi Imam Rumi, son of Jahanara Imam, began the fast-unto-death in front of the National
Museum on Tuesday morning to push for their demands, including a ban on Jamaat.
Twelve more Shahbagh protesters joined the hunger strike till Friday night.
Private service-holder Manik Sutradhar, who started the fast-unto-death on Tuesday, fell sick and was admitted to BIRDEM Hospitals, said Senjuti Shonima Nodi, a member of Shaheed Rumi Squad.
Condition of others was not alarming, although many felt weak, she added.
The protesters who began the fast-unto-death are Dhaka University students Sadat Hossain Niloy and Mehdi Hasan Shuvro, Dhaka College students Shahidul Haque Ananda and Rubayet Dwip, Jahangirnagar University student Quazi Akash, American International University of Bangladesh student Nazmul Haque Bhuiyan and private service-holder Manik Sutradhar. Schoolteacher Alif Pradhan and blogger Shafi joined them on Wednesday morning.
Dhaka University students Syed Faiz Ahmed, Seuti Sagufta and Ranjan Banik of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University students Saiful Islam Sourav and Swagatom Saha Neel, Jagannath University student Nasir Morshed, Bangladesh Open University student HI Hamza and lawyer SR Jony later joined the protesters.
The protestor said several students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology would join them soon.
‘We are observing the fast-unto-death as the government has not initiated any move to ban Jamaat and Shibir,’ Senjuti Shanima Nodi said adding that a fast-unto-death was the most effective form of a non-violent movement. ‘We seek support of all,’ she added.
Members of the squad described the hunger strike as a supplementary programme, saying a group of Shahbagh protesters, who were dissatisfied with the ‘mild’ programmes announced by blogger Imran H Sarker on Tuesday, had begun the fast-unto-death to push for their demands.
On Friday, language movement hero Abdul Matin, writer Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and vocalist Maqsudul Huq visited the hunger strikers and expressed solidarity with their demands. (Source)
