A Juba Dal leader on Friday succumbed to injuries sustained in a clash between ruling and opposition parties at Dumuria in Khulna during general strike on Thursday called by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led opposition alliance.
Dumuria upazila Juba Dal vice-president Gazi Nasimuddin Sumon, 28, died at the Bhanga upazila health complex at about 2:00am. He was taken to the health complex on way to Dhaka as his condition was deteriorated.
Local BNP called a day-long general strike in Khulna district for Sunday in protest against the ‘killing’ of Nasimuddin.
Witnesses said that a procession of Juba League, the youth organisation backed by ruling Awami League, led by Mukul Biswash attacked Nasimuddin with sticks and iron rods while he was leading a procession at Dumuria.
With critical injuries, Nasimuddin was handed over to the police at about 1:30pm on Thursday.
The Dummuria police station officer-in-charge, Mashiur Rahman, said the victim was a listed ‘terror’ and was wanted in many criminal cases.
‘Ruling party men attacked him when he was vandalising shops along with his associates as the shops were opened defying hartal,’ he said. (Source)
