297 get VoIP licences on first day

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on Monday handed over 297 licences to qualified applicants to provide Voice over Internet Protocol service on the first day of issuance of 863 licences.
BTRC chairman Sunil Kanti Bose handed over the licences to the applicants at a ceremony at the commission office in the capital.
Bose urged the licensees to operate the business under the BTRC rules and contribute for the development of the nation.
He also assured them of extending all kinds of cooperation for the betterment of the business.
On January 16, the BTRC approved 1,004 applications for awarding the VoIP licence among which 863 firms submitted the licence acquisition fees until March 19, said BTRC officials.
According to BTRC officials, currently the country records around four crore minutes of international calls every day of which one crore minutes are routed illegally.
The government receives three cents (one cent equals to around 80 paisa) from an international incoming call.
In a recent move, the BTRC directed the international gateway operators to form a clearing house in a bid to curb illegal international call termination
and unhealthy competition among the service providers.
The BTRC in a directive asked the IGW operators to from a central platform for routing the international calls to monitor them properly.
The BTRC directive came following a recent trend of decreasing international call volume and offering of low rates in international calls other than the prescribed rates, it said.
The BTRC officials said hundreds of individuals, small cartels and firms were involved in illegal VoIP business across the country which causes a huge loss to government revenue. (Source)
