New BGMEA office bearers take charge



The newly-elected president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Md Atiqul Islam, on Monday said if required they would appoint lobbyist to attain generalised system of preferences facilities for the garment sector in the US market.
He made the comment at the charge handover ceremony at the BGMEA auditorium in the city.
The immediate past president of the BGMEA, Md Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, handed over the charge to Atiqul.
The other newly-elected office bearers of the association also took office on the day.
Shafiul said he along with the other members of a 15-member team led by commerce secretary Mahbub Ahmed would leave Dhaka today (Tuesday) to represent Bangladesh before the United States Trade Representative’s hearing over GSP issue to be held on March 28 in Washington.
Shafiul hoped that they would able to retain the GSP facilities in the US market as the government and the garment factory owners had taken initiative to fulfil all of the conditions needed to retain the facilities.
Atiqul said the newly-elected office bearers of the BGMEA would ensure transparency and accountability in their activities for the next two years.
He said that the new BGMEA board would take initiatives to ensure bank loans with lower interest, fire safety and 100 per cent factory compliance, disaster management training, introduction of technical training institute in each district, preparation of workers database and implementation of service book.
The new BGMEA president also said that they
would take steps to remove infrastructure problem and gas and electricity crisis in the garment sector on priority basis.
Apart from Atiqul, the new BGMEA office bearers are first vice-president Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, second vice-president SM Mannan Kochi, vice-president Md Shahidullah Azim and vice-president (finance) Reaz-Bin-Mahmood.
Earlier, the 30th annual general meeting of the BGMEA was held at the BGMEA auditorium.
Shafiul presided over the first session of the AGM while Atiqul chaired the concluding session of the meeting.
The AGM approved the budget of the association for the year 2012-13.
