Ministers term Khaleda Zia’s statement seditious, demand legal action

Most of the ministers on Monday blasted the leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia for her remarks in which she said on Sunday that the army would play its role in time.
They raised the issue at the weekly cabinet meeting at the secretariat after the discussions on the agenda was exhausted.
They said Khaleda Zia’s remarks tantamount to sedition, a senior minister told reporters later.
The meeting was chaired by prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The ministers demanded legal action against Khaleda Zia for what they said ‘committing an act of treason by inviting army intervention.’
Almost all the cabinet members said that the leader of the opposition and BNP chairperson should be charged for treason for the remarks she made in Bogra, the minister told New Age.
Sheikh Hasina, however, tried to pacify her colleagues saying, ‘Let her say whatever she wants.’
She asked ruling Awami League general secretary and LGRD minister Syed Ashraful Islam, to place Khaleda Zia’s recent remarks including what she had said about the Shahbagh protesters chronologically before the nation through a news conference.
On Sunday, Kheleda Zia said the army would ‘play its role in time’ when people were being killed ‘indiscriminately’ by the government.
The issue was raised by jute minister Abdul Latif Siddique when the prime minister was winding up the cabinet meeting.
He said that Khaleda Zia had committed an act of sedition by making the provocative statement at a public meeting.
Other colleagues joined him in no time to express their resentment against the opposition leader, he added.
The ministers also asked the home affairs minister, Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, to take legal action against Khaleda.
The cabinet approved a proposal for ratifying the establishment of the proposed BIMSTEC Secretariat in Dhaka, cabinet secretary Mohammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters later.
He said the cabinet, however, sent back the draft Bangladesh National Conservation Strategy for incorporating latest developments in various areas in the document.
‘The environment and forests ministry has been asked to update the document for the conservation of natural resources and environment for sustainable development,’ he said.
He said a cabinet committee and an expert committee formed during the previous tenure of Awami League in the government was reconstituted to accomplish the task. (Source)
