BNP man among 2 killed in Bangladesh crossfire

A Bangladesh Nationalist Party activist was killed by Rapid Action Battalion in an alleged ‘crossfire’ in Chandpur while another man was killed in another gunfight with the police in Dhaka on Monday.
The battalion claimed that the victim of Chandpur ‘crossfire’, Golam Gaus, also known as Moni Gaus, 40, was a robber and wanted for various crimes at Kachua upazila.
Kachua BNP secretary Khairul Abedin Shwapan told New Age, ‘Gaus was our activist.’
This is the fourth incident of such killing in the name of crossfire at Kachua upazila after Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir assumed the office of the home minister.
Three hundred and seventy five people have so far fallen victim to extrajudicial killing by law enforcers since January 6, 2009, when the government assumed office with a commitment to put an end to such killings.
The company commander of RAB-11 in Comilla, Squadron Leader Shahed Ahmed Khan, could not detail the political identity of Gaus, but said he was known to them as robber.
The battalion in a release claimed that the battalion members raided Miazibari village Kachua at about 2:45am, when a group of robber was taking preparation to commit ‘robbery.’
Sensing presence of the battalion team, the gang opened fire at the battalion members, triggering a gunfight, the battalion said, adding that Gaus died on the spot. His family could not be reached immediately.
In Dhaka,  an alleged drug peddler, Zico, 30, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the police in Nikunja area in the capital at about 5:00pm while, according to police, he was driving with firearm and drug. (Source)
