A Dhaka court on Monday set March 28 for hearing on acceptance of the charge-sheet pressed against 148 leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led 18-party opposition alliance for assaulting police and creating panic among people near the BNP Nayapaltan central office on March 11.
The accused include opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque, BNP leaders Amanullah Aman, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Mohammad Shahjahan, Habibur Rahman Habib, Ahsanul Haque, Azizul Islam, and AZM Zahid Hossain, and Jatiya Ganatantrik Party president Shafiul Alam Prodhan.
The defence council, Sanaullah Miah, filed a petition with the court not to accept the charge-sheet, as it was submitted without producing the accused before the court.
According to the law, he said, there was no scope for accepting a charge-sheet in absence of the accused.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan set March 28 for hearing on acceptance of the charge-sheet and asked the officials concerned to produce the accused before the court.
Additional public prosecutor Shah Alam Talukder, however, told New Age that the court did not pass any order on the charge-sheet. (Source)
