NBR to set revenue target considering political unrest

The National Board of Revenue chairman, Ghulam Hussain, on Monday said the target of revenue collection for the next fiscal year would be set considering the external and internal issues including political unrest.
‘We should set the target in a realistic way not by following only the growth achieved in the previous fiscal year,’ he said at a seminar on tax deduction at sources in Bangladesh and international perspective.
The tax administration capacity and taxpayers services project of the NBR organised the seminar at Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka.
Hussain said, ‘Usually the NBR sets revenue collection target by adding 15-16 per cent growth on the amount collected in the previous year.’
‘This is not realistic and we should keep in mind some internal and external issues including hartals, political instability in the country and trends in international economy in setting revenue collection target,’ he said.
He also said that the NBR would take initiatives so that taxpayers could avoid hassles such as paying double tax at any level.
At the seminar, representatives from different banks alleged that they faced complexities in deducting tax at sources as they did not get NBR circulars in time.
Hussain assured them that all circulars issued by the NBR would be sent to the stakeholders in time.
NBR members Syed Aminul Karim, Md Ala Uddin and Bashir Uddin Ahmed spoke, among others, at the programme. (Source)
