Students in the port city looking to build a career in the garment sector can now better prepare themselves.
The opportunities open as Chittagong BGMEA Institute of Fashion and Technology is offering four-year honours courses on fashion design and technology, and apparel manufacturing and technology, from this year.
The activities of the institute at the BGMEA building in the city’s south Khulshi area started in full swing on February 25.
The institute has well-equipped multimedia classrooms and other laboratory facilities, including a computer lab, CAD (computer-aided design) lab, sewing lab, textile testing lab, and a pattern and product development lab.
Its library has a rich collection of books and journals and internet access.
However, the institute has been offering different diploma, certificate, and short courses on the garment sector related subjects since 2002, as a branch of the Dhaka BGMEA Institute of Fashion and Technology.
The programmes are designed to develop competent technical professionals for the garment sector, said Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, the outgoing first vice president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and also the president of the institute’s governing body.
The institute plans to expand its academic and infrastructure facilities and introduce four-year BSc honours courses on knitwear manufacturing and technology, textile engineering and textile management, and MBA and diploma programmes on various other subjects, he added.
There is also a plan to turn the institute into a university in future. “We are providing scholarships to talented students,” Chowdhury said.
“The students will easily get jobs as there are many vacant posts in this sector due to a lack of skilled manpower,” he said.
This will also save foreign currency used for paying high remunerations to foreign personnel recruited to such posts, he added.
SM Sajedul Islam, chief executive officer of the institute, said their aim is to develop skilled professionals.
The graduates from this institution will come out as skilled manpower for the sector, he added.
The garment sector, contributing around 80 percent to the country’s total export earnings, employs around 35 lakh people.
“The market size of the sector is expected to double within the next ten years, if we can combat the challenges it is facing now,” Islam said.
Such institutions will play a significant role in addressing the challenges, he said. (Source)
