Discussants in a daylong divisional workshop in Barisal on Sunday said socio-political instability, lack of transparency and accountability and expanding inequity were the stumbling blocks to achieving the targets of millennium development goals.
Participants in the workshop on ‘Post 2015 Development Agenda’ highlighted the importance of economic growth for poverty reduction and addressing inequality, social protection, access to quality and basic services like education, skills, health, water and sanitation and clear and effective accountability mechanisms.
They discussed eight goals including eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, promotion of gender equality and women empowerment, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases, assurance of environmental sustainability, developing a global partnership for development.
The participants, reviewing a framework of 21 targets and 60 indicators under those eight goals to monitor achievement of MDGs, said only eight indicators succeeded to meet the goal, 22 need attention, 11 still on track, 4 lacks data while others also have deficiencies in touching MDGs targets.
The programme was organised by General Economics Division of Bangladesh Planning Commission in collaboration with Bangladesh Development Society, supported by the United Nations and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation and assisted by Democracy International, Inc at BDS Auditorium.
Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner, presided over the programme attended by Nurul Amin, divisional commissioner.
Toibur Rahman and Nizamul Huq, senior assistant chiefs of GED, presented keynotes in the three interactive sessions assisted by Abul Kashem, deputy general manager of PKSF.
Anowar Zahid, and Dipu Hafizur Rahman, NGO organisers, moderated and facilitated the programme participated in by about 100 officials form government and non-government, socio-cultural-religious-political-educational organisations and elites. (Source)
