Deadline looms for CCCI polls campaign

Candidates are busy campaigning for the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) polls 2013-14, scheduled to be held on Wednesday, as the cutoff time for the campaign is midnight tonight.
The polls had initially been set for today, but was later postponed due to the daylong hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami in greater Chittagong, said Jamal Uddin Ahmed, chairman of the poll’s election board.
The election board has completed all necessary tasks to hold the polls in a free, fair and credible manner, he said.
A total of 6,024 voters are set to cast their votes at the polls to elect 24 directors for CCCI, he said.
Of the board of directors, 12 members will be elected from the Ordinary group, six from the Associate group, three from Town group and three others from Trade group.
The three candidates under Trade group this year have already won uncontested, Jamal Uddin said.
One significant change in this poll is that no proxy voters or alternate nominees will vote for principal voters, unlike previous polls, he said. “Only the principal voters will be eligible in this poll.”
The previous rule has been cancelled by a high court direction, he said.
Meanwhile, the two panels vying for the 24 posts this year are busy campaigning at different business concerns in Chittagong.
Incumbent CCCI President Morshed Murad Ibrahim and former first vice-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association Abdus Salam are leading one panel while the incumbent Senior Vice President of CCCI Mahbubul Alam and NCC Bank Chairman Nurun Newaz Selim are leading the other panel.
